Shamica Peyton

My name is Shamica Peyton, I’m a 2 time felon. I’ve been home from prison for 6 years and in that time I’ve been faced with many challenges, my biggest challenge has been within myself. I’ve always been one to make sure everyone else was good and by doing that I wasn’t focusing on the things I needed to do for me. My advice to you is this, you have to be your biggest fan. Not everyone is blessed with a support team, family or even a friend to have their back when being released and for that I’m grateful. Don’t allow yourself to fall victim to the system that is set up to fail us all. I went to several job interviews, got offered the job only to be rejected because of my background. This will happen to many of you, my advice to you is don’t be discouraged another opportunity will come. I am now employed with a full time job and working towards starting my own business. Success comes from within, to be better you have to do better. Put God first, Keep believing in yourself and you will beat the odds. I’m thankful for Rachel Pope for always believing in me, always supporting me. It’s because of people like her that I have hope. Thank you Can We Talk Life for the opportunity to share.

Success Story - Joffy Darby

Hello, my name is Jeffrey, and life after incarceration was a journey. I was incarcerated for 5 years and after coming home in 2015 it wasn’t easy. I came home and went into a halfway house in North Carolina with absolutely nothing. I was in the halfway house for 6 months making $50 per day which was an adjustment for me due to my prior lifestyle. My mindset was different being though jail was not an option for me.

In 2017, I moved back to Virginia with a purpose. It was still a struggle but I didn’t let that discourage me. Life wasn’t a walk in the park. Being back in Virginia, I was met by old friends who thought I was back to my old ways. But, I wanted better so I got a job with the trash company as a laborer. While doing so I took the test to get my CDL. In 2020, I started working driving trucks. I was able to get back on my feet by getting my own place and building my credit. I know longer had to be looking over my shoulders nor had to worry about my place being raided. Eight years later I can say the process was rough but well worth going through. All in all I wouldn’t change a thing. It help me become the man I am today.
